Benefits

Fitness
A great way to get and stay fit. An all over body workout incorporating cardio, strength and core drills. All sessions commence with a warm up (usually 20 mins) and then students work basics, kata or kumite in a interval training style technique.
Friendship
Friendly dojo environment were people of all ages can train together, encourage each other and grow. A great team environment. General classes are open to all ages/genders, giving the opportunity for younger students to find and develop their own voice amongst peers of all ages.
Resilence
Learning a martial arts provides opportunity to reflect on your own actions, movement and behaviours. Through this reflection the foundations of resilence is formed. Over time, working with others - receiving and giving feedback - you further develop resilence.
Tournaments
For those with a competitive spirit - there is plenty of opportunity to pit your skills against others both in kumite (fighting), kata (form). Competitions are held regularly across clubs at a local, state, national and international level - for all age groups.

Karate club rules

BACKGROUND
  • The following rules are intended only for the internal regulation of the Qld Yamaguchi Goju Karate (IKGA) Club (“Club”).
  • The Club is an unincorporated voluntary association established on 31 July 2012 to promote safe and enjoyable learning and practice of karate in Queensland.
  • The Club’s karate style is that of the IKGA (International Karatedo Gojukai Association) with which the Club is affiliated, and the Club also takes notice of the guidelines of the Australian Karate Federation (AKF).
  • The Club was founded by Richard Nicklen, Julie Russell, and Tom Curtis. They have constituted the Club’s membership. They have led the Club’s activities for their own learning and participation in karate and for others as students of and participants in karate.
  • The Club’s founding members resolved to adopt these rules, to assist and promote the future running of the Club’s activities in karate.
  • The Club’s founding members have until now maintained broadform liability insurance to cover the Club’s activities and these rules provide for this to continue.
  • There is also a Waiver and Indemnity form as part of the membership application process which is intended to have binding legal effect. RULES
1. People may join the Club as members and casual visitors to the Club are also permitted. 2. The categories of member are:
  • Voting member - must be aged 18 or above, hold a 1st dan black belt awarded through the IKGA (or alternatively recognised by the IKGA), and ordinarily live in Queensland
  • Non-voting member - must be aged 18 or above, have any grade below black belt, and ordinarily live in Queensland.
  • Non-voting youth member – must be aged between 6 and 17, and ordinarily live in Queensland.
  • Non-voting associate member – anyone outside the above categories. Visitors may participate casually and are non-voting.
3. Members and visitors are all subject to these rules. 4. The Club operates through voting members choosing a Club Committee that in turn chooses Office Holders to organise Club activities. 5. Voting members only will meet at least annually (a quorum being not less than 3 people) to choose a Committee of not less than 3 people and / or deal with other business. The choice of Committee will be made by voting members on a show of hands by simple majority.; other business will be decided similarly, except for a change to these rules that will require 75%. Voting members may summon a meeting by giving reasonable written notice (including by email) to each other and the meeting shall take place when and where a simple majority among those eligible agrees. The choice of Committee will continue until a further meeting of voting members decides otherwise.6. The Committee will choose officers from among them being a Chief Executive and Secretary / Treasurer. The choice will be made by committee members on a show of hands by simple majority. The choice of Club officers will continue until the Committee decides otherwise. 7. The Committee will meet at least annually to decide on the Club’s directions and policies. A quorum of the Committee will be two. 8. Committee Responsibilities –
  • The Chief Executive has general responsibility for the Club’s operations and the appointment of instructors.
  • The Secretary / Treasurer has responsibility for the clubs records and financial affairs and is authorised to pay any person or body for expenses properly incurred for or on behalf of the club’s operations.
  • The Club officers are to report to the Committee annually.
  • The Committee is to provide a brief written report to voting members once a year.
  • All meetings of the Club are to be minuted by the Secretary / Treasurer and all records are to be kept by the Secretary / Treasurer for seven years. 9. Anyone wishing to become a Club member or Club visitor will have to apply by filling in a form that is submitted to a Club Officer. Either of the Club Officers may in their discretion provisionally accept or refuse any application. The Club Committee will decide to finally accept or refuse any application (and in so doing may override any decision by the Club Officers).
10. The Club Officers will arrange venues (dojos) for karate training. Each dojo will be under the control of the Head instructor there, who will instruct students and who may use others to assist in instructing students. The head instructors will be able to seek guidance and support from the Club’s chief instructor. 11. Any member or visitor will be under the immediate supervision and direction of the head instructor of the dojo at any given time, and Any member or visitor who fails to follow a direction may be immediately suspended by the head instructor, chief instructor or Club Officer. The Committee or its delegate will then investigate and decide about such issues by:
  • confirming and varying or ending the suspension, along with issuing a caution or placing on probation
  • confirming the suspension and terminating membership or visits, or
  • excusing the person and revoking the suspension.
12. The Club Officers will, consistent with the Club’s available resources:
  • take out and keep current suitable broadform liability insurance through the Australian Karate Federation (AKF) that covers all members and visitors who engage in Club activities and protects club members and visitors from liability (note this is subject to the waiver and indemnity from members and visitors that appears separately in this document and which is intended to have legal effect);
  • maintain a Club chief instructor holding a suitable AKF training accreditation
  • maintain a Club instructor with a blue card who will ensure the Club’s compliance with the Working with Children (Risk Management and Screening) Act 2000 (Qld) (the Blue Card System) concerning any karate activities with children
  • maintain a First Aid kit and member qualified to render first aid in connection with Club activities.
13. Fees, training times, venues and instructors names will be publicised to members and visitors to facilitate participation in the Club’s activities. All members and visitors must pay Club fees as determined by the Committee which will be collected by head instructors or Club Officers for remission to the Secretary / Treasurer. Members must be financial or their membership automatically terminates, unless a Club Officer or head instructor in their discretion extends a month’s grace to pay. Any member’s (or visitor’s) debt to the Club does not exceed their fees ie the Club must not commit itself to expenses beyond the Club’s ordinarily funded means. At all times members are free to resign their membership and visitors may leave the Club, but any unmet liabilities they have to the Club are still owed.14. All members and visitors must support the IKGA Dojo Kun (Training Maxims):
  • We are proud to study the way of Goju
  • We are courteous in manners
  • We strive to develop courage and fighting spirit
  • We cultivate fellowship and understanding
  • We respect the ideals of loyalty and honour
15. The Club may be dissolved at any time by a majority decision of voting members only. The outgoing Committee will endeavour to inform members and visitors of any such decision. As the Club is a not-for-profit organisation, any funds or property left after expenses will be made over to a kindred club or body within the IKGA as decided by the outgoing committee.
